1. The surveillance or close observation of someone, something, or some area, especially by police. We're on a stakeout to see if we can get evidence that Johnny Miggs has taken control of the cartel.
2. A person or group of people performing such an operation. I think that flower van parked across the street is a stakeout—they've been there all day.
