A group of individuals within a unit or organization who do not cooperate, accept change, or act in the group's interest, either deliberately or due to incompetence. This awkward squad of senators is causing headaches for both parties.
circular firing squad
A group, usually a political party, that is allied against a common enemy or opponent but whose internal disagreements and attacks end up doing more damage to each other than to their target. The lead up to the presidential nomination saw the party devolve into a circular firing squad, as each candidate's vociferous bid to unseat the incumbent president ended up creating huge divisions and disarray within the party itself.
A group of people hired or acting for the purposes of enforcement, protection, intimidation, and/or harassment on behalf of someone else. Primarily heard in US. After Mr. Smith refused to pay the mafia protection money, they sent a goon squad around to rough him up.

I really do not want to (do something). A firing squad is a group of people assigned to execute someone by gunfire. The phrase hyperbolically implies that the speaker would rather face a gruesome death than do what is being discussed. I'd rather face a firing squad than do another presentation for the board. Last time, they found an error in my report and screamed at me for it.
dated slang A division, department, or agency of law-enforcement officials who specialize in policing the illegal drug trade. ("Junk" is a slang term for illicit drugs, especially heroin.) I was in homicide for a few years, then they transferred me to the junk squad. The boss thinks there's a rat in the outfit leaking information of our drug trade to the junk squad.

Shortly before his death Robert Burns is reported to have said, ‘Don't let the awkward squad fire over me’. Nowadays, the expression is often used to refer to a group of people who are regarded as tiresome or difficult to deal with.
