To press on or rub a surface to remove an imperfection or unevenness. A noun or pronoun can be used between "smooth" and "away." Using a simple moisturizer on a daily basis is a good way to smooth away cracks and wrinkles from dry skin. I actually find our culture's obsession with smoothing wrinkles away to be quite sad.

to remove something, such as wrinkles or other unevenness, by pressing or smoothing. Jeff put the cloth on the table and smoothed the wrinkles away with his hand. Jeff smoothed away the wrinkles.
