shut (one's) eyes

1. Literally, to close one's eyes. I turned away and shut my eyes as the nurse inserted the IV. Shut your eyes and let me put this warm compress over them—it should help with your headache.
2. By extension, to willfully ignore, pretend not to notice, or choose not to deal with something. You can't just shut your eyes when your kids make bad choices—you have to find ways to help them do better. Our boss would rather shut his eyes to the truth than figure out how to keep the company from going bankrupt.
