shine through
To be or become evident, noticeable, or apparent through something else. Likened to a light being or becoming visible through some surface or substance. His intentions seem honorable enough, but ask him about how much money stands to be made and his real motivation starts to shine through. It's only in the second half of the novel that the writer's sense of humor starts to shine through.
