To throw or fling someone through the air and onto the ground. The drunk driver struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk and sent him flying. If you don't get out of my face, I'm going to send you flying!

Cause to be knocked or scattered about, as in She bumped into the table and sent all the papers flying. This somewhat hyperbolic idiom was first recorded in 1789.
