scuff up

To scrape, scratch, or abrade someone or something so that that one or more visible marks are left as a result. A noun or pronoun can be used between "scuff" and "up." The movers scuffed up my brand-new mahogany desk in their moving van! It was pretty scary falling from my motorcycle like that, but thankfully it just scuffed me up a bit.
