A large, uproarious commotion. There was a rumpus out in the streets, so I went out to investigate. The kids were making an awful rumpus in the living room, so I told them to go play outside.

old-fashioned A room in a house dedicated to noisy recreational activities. I was so happy when we moved into a house with a rumpus room for the kids. I told you to play those noisy games in the rumpus room or else go outside!
