room-in (with one's baby)

room-in (with one's baby)

To remain with one's baby in the same hospital room following the baby's birth. Hospitals now encourage new mothers to room-in with their babies at all times until they are discharged. Rooming-in wasn't a very common practice when my children were born, with babies kept in the hospital nursery instead.
