To increase one's knowledge (about someone or something) by reading. Usually followed by "on." I never learned much about politics in school, so I've started reading up to have a better understanding of how it all works. Tom's been reading up on the principles of Feng Shui, and he says he wants to start implementing them in the layout of our home. The more I read up on the political candidate, the more I distrusted him.

To increase one's knowledge of a person or topic by reading about them or it. I better read up on this material before I try to teach it tomorrow. The more I read up on the political candidate, the more I came to distrust him.

to find and read some information about someone or something. Please go to the library and read up on George Washington. I don't know anything about that. I guess I need to read up.
