reach past (someone or something)

1. To extend one's hand past or beyond someone or something. They sat us right in front of their wine rack, so the waiters kept having to reach past me to get the bottles they needed. See if you can reach past that fence to get our ball back.
2. To extend physically beyond someone or something. I let my hair grow until it reached past my shoulders so I could donate it. The sound from the performers on stage doesn't reach past the first few rows of the audience very well.
3. To be able to bypass or circumvent some intangible barrier or difficulty. Working with my therapist, I was able to reach past the trauma of the incident and realize what changes I needed to make in my life. Critics claim the politician reached past proper protocols to change the way the funds were being used.
