To engage in a struggle, battle, confrontation, or competition, especially in a determined or courageous manner in the face of very poor chances. He was outclassed from the beginning of the struggle, but the newcomer put up a good struggle against the champ. She and her campaign put up a struggle to the very end, but the writing was on the wall in the weeks leading up to the election that she had lost.
