To subject oneself to danger or trouble. I really put my head in the lion's mouth by sneaking out of the house late at night. I think you're putting your head in the lion's mouth by driving in such torrential rain.

If you put your head into the lion's mouth or in the lion's mouth, you deliberately place yourself in a dangerous or difficult situation. Jim Dale, senior weather forecaster, has put his head in the lion's mouth and predicted a dry, sunny summer. Note: This expression refers to the traditional circus act where a lion-tamer puts his or her head in a lion's mouth.
