point the way (to something)

To indicate the direction in which something is or should be going, or the way in which something can or should be done. The ambassador's speech showed a renewed dedication to resolving the border crisis and pointed the way to peace with the country's neighbor. For years, our team's research has been pointing the way to better treatment, possibly even a cure, for the horrible disease.
