play fast and loose with the truth

To speak or write about something in such a way that what is true or false is misleadingly or deceptively unclear. I know these tabloids play fast and loose with the truth, but they've always been a guilty pleasure of mine. Everyone knows politicians play fast and loose with the truth, so trying to pin them down with facts can be infuriatingly difficult!
