one-up(s)manship

one-up(s)manship

The act of trying to outdo or be more successful, admirable, or respected than someone else. If the members of our Congress were less involved with political one-upsmanship, we could have passed several bills by now that could be stimulating the economy. I've never seen someone more devoted to one-upmanship than Tim. No matter what you say you've accomplished, he'll tell you about something even more impressive he's done.
