one word leads to another

one word leads to another

Said of a conversation that escalates or develops in a surprising or unexpected way. A: "Tom went in to tell the boss something, and now he's leaving with all his stuff in a box! What happened?" B: "Oh, you know how it is. You offer someone a bit of criticism, one word leads to another, and you end up getting into a shouting match with each other." We started chatting by the table of snacks at the party. One word led to another, and the next thing I knew we had a date set for this Saturday!
