To be nice, pleasant, or polite to someone, even if one does not feel inclined to do so. I know you don't care for your cousin, but this is the one time of year we all get the chance to be together, so just make nice, OK? We'll make nice with police as soon as they stop targeting our community for no good reason.

Be agreeable, behave well. Dating from the mid-1900s, this slangy phrase may, according to lexicographer J. E. Lighter, be imitative of baby talk. It appeared in the musical West Side Story (1957), “You’re gonna make nice with the PRs [Puerto Ricans] from now on” and has become a cliché.
