make it hot for (someone)

To pressure someone or otherwise make them uncomfortable, usually so that they will change their behavior or act in a certain way. The other students decided to make it hot for the classroom bully so he'd stop picking on the younger kids. If we want this guy to confess, we need to make it hot for him in the interrogation room.

Cause trouble or discomfort for someone, as in They made it so hot for Larry that he had to resign, or The police were making it hot for shoplifters. This seemingly modern idiom was first recorded in 1618.
