From Latin, literally, "pending litigation," referring to court orders that have been put into effect while a matter is still being decided in a court. The judge ordered that the husband pay alimony pendente lite to his wife until the divorce was concluded. The lower court's ruling was overturned pendente lite while Supreme Court justices considered the implications of the case.
