To give one a clear or easier path to victory or success by no longer participating in a competition of some kind. The returning state champion's sudden departure from the tournament leaves the field clear for last year's runner-up to claim the title. To be honest, I'd rather withdraw from consideration and leave the field clear for you to get the job.

enable somebody to be successful in a particular area of activity because other people or groups are not competing with them any longer: Many of our more experienced players are injured or resting, which leaves the field clear for new talent.
