1. Literally, a kick on one's buttocks. The bully gave Tom a kick in the seat of his pants as he walked by.
2. A humiliating or frustrating disappointment or setback. Losing my job after my car broke down was a real kick in the seat of my pants.
3. A forceful rebuke or incitement intended to motivate one to act or improve. I know kicking you out is drastic, but I'm hoping it will be the kick in the seat of your pants you need to get your life in order. The coach's rousing half-time speech gave the team a kick in the seat of their pants.
