hot on the trail (of someone or something)

Very closely or aggressively following, pursuing, or tracking someone or something. Police are hot on the trail of two armed men who held up a liquor store late last night. A: "We've got to find those stolen goods." B: "Our top detective is hot on the trail, sir."
