hit (one) like a brick wall

To have a significant negative emotional effect on one. I hadn't talked to Bill in years, but man has his death hit me like a brick wall. I can't wrap my mind around the fact that someone I grew up with just isn't here anymore. Sally is usually pretty stoic, but news of the company's closure seems to have hit even her like a brick wall.
