have (something) hanging over (one's) head

To be constantly worried, anxious, or stressed about something, such as an upcoming obligation or event. Why don't you just write the paper now, rather than have it hanging over your head all weekend? Ever since I lost my job, I have the mortgage payment hanging over my head each month.

Fig. to have something bothering or worrying one; to have a deadline worrying one. I keep worrying about my old car breaking down. I hate to have something like that hanging over my head. I have a history paper that is hanging over my head.
