have the devil's (own) luck

(redirected from had the devils own luck)

have the devil's (own) luck

Originally derived from the folkloric belief that someone must have made a pact with the devil in order to get such good fortune.
1. To have extremely good luck. I can't believe I won the lottery and a radio contest in the same week—I have the devil's own luck right now! I'm telling you, she must have the devil's luck to escape such a horrible accident unscathed!
2. To have exceptionally good fortune despite one's evil or immoral actions. The politician has faced scandal after scandal, but her popularity hasn't wavered at all. She seems to have the devil's luck. The criminal must have the devil's own luck, because every time he's about to be caught, something happens that helps him elude the police.
