1. Literally, to move to or reach the highest point of something. I was completely exhausted by the time we got to the top of the climbing wall.
2. By extension, to become important, renowned, or celebrated in some field or area. Don't get discouraged, it takes time to get to the top. You have a lot of competition—every doctor here is working to get to the top of their field.
