1. To step aboard a mode of transportation (such as a train or airplane). I think you'll feel better once we've gotten onto the plane and are headed for Hawaii. As soon as I got onto the train, the conductor announced a delay.
2. To figure out that someone is doing something in secret. Keep your voice down, we don't want mom to get onto us! The police are here—somebody's gotten onto us!
