draw (one's) fire away

1. To attract the gunfire of an attacker away (from some other target). The soldier ran into the open and drew the enemy fire away from the rest of his squad. The mother goose drew the hunters' fire away by charging at the hunters.
2. To attract the attention of one who is attacking or berating someone else. While I was getting yelled at, my sister drew Mom's fire away from me by turning up the TV as loud as possible. The senator had hoped that the new incident would draw the media's fire away from him.
