1. To carry or convey someone or something directly beside and pressing up against someone or something else. The waves brought the drifting life raft up against our boat. A sudden rush of people entering the train brought me up against my friend in a very awkward way.
2. To force someone or something to confront or deal with someone or something. Working in city hall has brought me up against the very real corruption influencing our politics. I've been a police officer for nearly 30 years, and it's brought me up against all manner of criminals and degenerates. Activists are hoping to bring the issue up against their opponents in a Supreme Court battle.
