To have one's or something's role, function, status, capacity, etc., taken over by someone or something else; to have someone or something take one's or something's place. I feel like we're all going to be replaced with machines someday. The manager is being replaced with a younger, better educated person. All his anger was replaced with sadness after the initial shock wore off.
