To do something that is (or could be perceived as) surprising, daring, or perhaps inappropriate. The phrase is often used before a question to soften it. May I be so bold as to ask for a second helping? I'd like to propose a different plan, if I may be so bold.
be/make so ˈbold (as to do something) (formal) used especially when politely asking a question or making a suggestion which you hope will not offend anyone: May I make so bold, sir, as to suggest that you try the grilled fish?
