ah(,) shucks

1. An expression of shyness, happiness, or embarrassment. A: "You're just too sweet!" B: "Ah shucks, you're gonna make me blush." Though he was clearly thrilled by her compliments, all he could manage was a timid, "Ah, shucks" and a smile. Ah, shucks, it was nothing, really. Anyone else would have done the same thing.
2. An expression of disappointment. Ah shucks, it looks like we're going to lose the game after all. A: "Sorry, kids, the rain clouds are rolling in—we're going to have to cancel the picnic." B: "Ah, shucks!" Ah, shucks—that was supposed to be a surprise for your birthday!

Ah, that old chestnut.

cliché Said of something, especially an excuse, explanation, aphorism, or pithy comment, that one has heard repeated so often that it is now hackneyed, boring, or irksome. A: "Tom said that he was late because he got stuck in traffic." B: "Ah, that old chestnut. Next he'll tell me his dog ate his quarterly report!" "Follow your heart"—ah, that old chestnut. Whether there's truth in it or not, I can't stand it. A: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away!" B: "Ah, that old chestnut. That's as untrue as it is annoying!"

An affirmative exclamation commonly used by members of the US military. The soldiers all shouted "Hoo-ah!" before dispersing.

Totally illegible or very difficult to read. "Pakapoo" is a Chinese lottery game. Because its betting slips display Chinese characters, non-Chinese-speaking participants would not be able to read them. Primarily heard in UK, Australia. nuts

1. noun, vulgar slang The testicles. I kicked the mugger in the nuts and grabbed my wallet back off him. He grabbed his nuts in a lewd gesture to the crowd.
2. noun, vulgar slang Confidence, self-esteem, motivation, etc. Often but not always said of a man. You've got nuts standing up to them like that, man. He doesn't have the nuts to try a plan that bold.
3. adjective Crazy; manic or eccentric; out of one's mind. Trying to figure out what's wrong with this computer is driving me nuts! You're totally nuts if you think they'll let you get away with it.
4. interjection An exclamation of dismay, frustration, or exasperation. Ah, nuts! I left my lunchbox on the school bus! A: "Nuts!" B: "What's wrong?" A: "The screwdriver slipped out of my hand and left a big gash in the wall."

um and ah

To be hesitant or indecisive, especially when speaking out loud about a decision. "Um" and "ah" are common filler words used by habit or when one is deciding what to say. Try not to um and ah so much when you're considering a counter-proposal—it's not professional. It felt like that guy ummed and ahed for five minutes before he gave me his order.

AH

An initialism of "asshole." Used in text messages and online communications.
1. vulgar slang The anus. Dude, I'm never eating spicy food again. It's like I have fire coming out of my AH! That bout of diarrhea wreaked havoc on my AH, I'll tell you that much.
2. rude slang A rude, annoying, or mean person; a jerk. Ugh, that guy is such an AH—don't even bother talking to him. Don't worry about xDarkAngel77x, she's been a real AH on this forum for years. Don't pay attention to that guy, he's a real AH.
