This cultivated tree is normally grafted onto a wild cherry (Prunus avium) rootstock to give the tree a more vigorous root system - ask staff at the garden centre or nursery to identify the graft point for you when you buy the tree as this can occasionally cause problems if shoots appear from below the graft point.
