give (one) a shot at (someone or something)
1. To allow one to attempt some task or activity. I'll give you a shot at driving my car, if you want to see how you like it. Give me a shot at him—I'll get the information we need.
2. To allow one an attempt to deal with someone in some way, as by teaching, persuading, or obtaining information from them. Give me have a shot at him—I'll get the information we need. A: "The boss said there's no way he will authorize an increase in our budget." B: "Give me take a shot at him. Maybe I can convince him otherwise."
3. To give one a chance to achieve, attain, or have success in something. The boss is giving you a shot at securing the biggest contract our company has ever had—don't screw it up!
