1. A male soldier placed at an exposed position ahead of a patrol to act as a lookout for enemies or hazards. The point man had just begun to signal to his unit that something suspicious lay ahead when an IED exploded at his feet.
2. A man who is assigned to a foremost position of authority, responsibility, or leadership for some group, enterprise, or endeavor. He was the president's point man when it came to dealings with Saudi Arabia. This is Thomas—he'll be your point man for the merger as we move forward.

1. n. a ballplayer who habitually scores points. Fred is supposed to be point man for our team, but tonight he is not doing so well.
2. n. anyone whose job it is to score successes against the opposition. The president expects the secretary of defense to be point man for this new legislation.
