1. A shortening of "eyelid." If your lids are getting heavy, why don't you just go take a nap?
2. slang A hat. Nice lid! Where did you get it?
3. slang Up to one ounce of marijuana. Where can we get a lid before the concert?
4. A period of time in which no more news will be released by the White House or a political campaign for a given period of time. The press secretary called a lid, so we won't be getting any more updates on the bill tonight.
5. A period of time in which a president or a presidential candidate will not be making public appearances. A: "I thought the president was going to be campaigning today." B: "Nope, his campaign called a lid, apparently. Wonder what prompted the change in plans."

2. n. one half to one ounce of marijuana. (Drugs. An amount that will fill a Prince Albert tobacco can lid. Often plural.) It looks like a matchbox to me. Why do they call it a lid?
