captain's pick

1. In sports, often golf, a player who does not meet the criteria for inclusion on a team and is instead added by the team captain. Primarily heard in UK. I didn't play as well as I would have hoped this season, so I'm praying that I'll be one of the captain's picks for the tournament.
2. A decision unilaterally made by a person of power, especially in politics. Primarily heard in Australia. You can't select someone for office without consulting the rest of us! There are bylaws that are supposed to prevent captain's picks like this.
