when in doubt, throw it out
1. If you are in doubt as to whether something is still safe to eat or drink, then err on the side of caution and throw it away. A: "Do you think this chicken is still OK to cook? It's past its use by date, but it smells fine." B: "When in doubt, throw it out. You don't want to get food poisoning, that's for sure."
2. If you are not sure if a certain material can be properly processed by your local recycling center, then it is better to put it in with your general waste. A: "Do you know if this plastic container can go in the recycling? It has a number 7 on it." B: "Hmm, I only know for sure that numbers 1, 2, and 5 can be recycled. When in doubt, throw it out!"
