take a/the leap

1. To do something that is risky or uncertain but which has the potential to advance one's position greatly. I know it's risky to start a business in a recession, but I don't want to put off my dream any longer. I'm ready to take the leap! This grant is a great opportunity for any small business looking to take a leap and expand into the global market.
2. To advance suddenly to a position of prominence or success. The team added a number of star players in the off-season, so they may well take a leap in their division this year. The massive success of their latest film has allowed the tiny independent production company to take the leap to the forefront of the industry.
