2. To take care of children in the absence of their parents; to be employed as a babysitter for someone. (Short for "babysit for.") I can't go to the movies tonight, I'm sitting for the Robinsons again. I always loved sitting for Sarah and Jake—they felt like my own kids!

1. to care for someone in the role of babysitter. I sit for Timmy sometimes. I like him. He's a good little kid. Mary doesn't sit for anyone anymore. It leaves no time for a social life.
