Shocked or frightened very suddenly or severely. (Hyperbolically alludes to scaring one so badly that they lose their sanity.) I tried to play it cool in front of my friends, but honestly, I was scared out of my wits watching that horror movie. Janet's been scared out of her wits ever since that burglar was caught breaking into her house.
