To move along at a very quick, brisk, or rapid pace, especially on a compact motorized vehicle. He's totally happy just putting along the countryside in the little van of his. We were putting along on our scooter through the streets of Venice when someone suddenly darted in front of us.

to move along rapidly, usually in a motorized vehicle. ("Putt-putt" is the sound made to mimic engines, especially small engines.) The little car was putting along down the highway, when one of the tires went flat. We were putting along very smoothly all the way into town.
