Of a product or service, to be or become so valuable as to offset its original cost or make that cost seem negligible. I know this fancy laptop is expensive, but considering how long and how often you'll be using it, it's the sort of thing that will pay for itself many times over. The machine was a bit more expensive, but the increased yield in our production line was so dramatic that it had paid for itself many times over.
