make way back

make (one's) way back (to something or some place)

To progress back toward one's point of origin, especially in a slow, gradual, or considered manner. It's getting dark out, so we should probably start making our way back to camp. I didn't have any money for a taxi, so I had to make my way back home on foot.

to work one's way back to something or some place. I made my way back to the little town in the densest fog I have ever seen. I went for a walk and got lost. It took hours for me to make my way back.
