loose thread

loose thread

1. A thread partially detached from a piece of fabric. All right, that's it—I'm cutting that loose thread off the rug. The cat keeps playing with it, and I'm afraid the rug will start unraveling soon.
2. An aspect or element of something that remains unresolved or unfinished. Typically used in plural constructions. I just need to tie up a few loose threads before I put the house up for sale. The detective still had one more loose thread to deal with before he was ready to close the case.
