lay (one's) life on the line

lay (one's) life on the line

To put oneself in harm's way (to achieve something), especially at the risk of losing one's life. (Sometimes used hyperbolically.) It's important to honor the men and women in the military, who lay their lives on the line every day defending our country. Look, I'm laying my life on the line to push this deal forward, so you had better make sure your company follows through on its promises!
