knocked from pillar to post

Moved or pushed from place to place, especially in a futile, indeterminate, or impermanent manner. My ex-husband and I never want our kids to feel as though they're being knocked from pillar to post, so we've agreed to share custody for a month at a time. He's been knocked from pillar to post for his work. I wish they would give him a break from so much travel.
