keep out of harm's way

1. To protect oneself from some source of harm or peril. We're going to be detonating the explosive soon, so we're asking everyone to keep out of harm's way behind the blast shield.
2. To protect someone else from harm or peril. In this usage, a noun or pronoun is used between "keep" and "out." We have to keep those bystanders out of harm's way before we try and put the fire out. You're so anxious to keep your children out of harm's way that you're going to end up denying them a lot of valuable life experiences.
