in need (of something)

Lacking something, which can be specified after "of." We're collecting canned goods for families in need this holiday season. The baby's been up all night crying, so my wife and I are seriously in need of some sleep. I have a killer headache and am in need of acetaminophen or something.

[of someone or an animal] to require something. We are in need of a new car. The company is in need of a larger building to hold all its employees.
